(0:15 - 0:41) I'm here today to talk about how we use Wixie for our morning news show. Wixie is a really great tool for this because it eliminated a lot of problems that we were having and it just works so well. So today we're gonna talk about what we do and hopefully it can help you out in your situation in the future.
(0:42 - 1:02) So I'm just gonna come up here and share my screen. Let me go with the tab so I can get audio if I need it. All right, so the first thing I'm gonna do is I'm gonna start with the actual example of what we do.
(1:03 - 1:30) And you know what I should do for that is I should actually give you the real spiel here when I do this. So what we do when we do this is we share this Wixie link right here when we are sharing our morning news. And the great thing about doing it this way is we don't have to worry about accounts.
(1:31 - 1:50) When it's the teacher's account like this, it's very easy to share the link with anyone including substitutes or anyone who is visiting. Can easily open it without any accounts or access issues. We always have problems with that when we used to use Google Slides.
(1:52 - 2:16) Sometimes you have problems with Zoom, but this one, if you have this one link, you're ready to go. If I copy this link and then let me switch from sharing as a tab to sharing as my window, that won't have sound. Okay, in that case, let me make the window first.
(2:17 - 2:33) I'm gonna make a guest window here that's not logged into anything. And now if I go to share, I should see guest window, right? Oh no, I guess I have to open it first. Okay, let me load the base page first.
(2:36 - 2:53) And then when that's loaded here, let me open that up. Oh, I guess I can't share a guest window, but I can share this page. I just can't share the audio.
(2:57 - 3:17) All right, so here is that example of the link right here. When anyone clicks the link, whether they're signed into Wixie or not, this is what they see for our Westbrier Morning News. By clicking the arrow, it progresses to the first slide.
(3:17 - 3:43) And one of the nice things is our principal, Dr. Sally Birch, does a morning message for the students. She always does a theme of the day, includes a would you rather, and then includes a riddle in her page. That page, she records her message and talks to the students and also it usually includes an audio book related to her message.
(3:44 - 3:53) So this is recorded by her almost daily. And it only takes as long as the videos that she puts into it. So it's really cool.
(3:54 - 4:03) After that, we usually have a Pledge of Allegiance. We have our Pledge of Allegiance come up. It's of course required in Virginia.
(4:04 - 4:21) Then we have our Minute of Silence, another requirement we have here in Virginia. Here we like to use the magic sticker where if you click it, the timer actually starts. So that works really well.
(4:23 - 4:38) Then we do things like our morning announcements and things of that nature. And then we have a special Do Not Pass page. What we do at our school is we do a short version daily.
(4:38 - 5:05) And then we have the extended version on Fridays only. So every day, the morning news only takes generally about four minutes or so, four to six minutes, depending on how many announcements we have for that day. Then after the Do Not Pass page on Fridays, at the end of the week, we have extra little segments such as we have some of our teachers love to do jokes.
(5:06 - 5:21) Ms. Cunningham, one of our sixth grade teachers. The kids love to make little fact pages like this one that they made about Taylor Swift. And we do a little fun little holiday videos in the season.
(5:22 - 5:29) Here's this one from Halloween. I include it as an example. They love to make trivia and joke pages too like this.
(5:31 - 5:56) And finally, at the very end, we have our thanks for turning in message. So with that being said, let's go out of guest mode here and let's change into editor mode. Get that sharing up right now.
(5:56 - 6:03) There it is. All right, so here I am signed into Wixie. Let me show you the behind the scenes, what's going on here.
(6:07 - 6:26) So here you can see a regular Wixie workspace. And as you can see, it looks a lot like a slideshow that you would see in either Google Slides or Canva or other presenting programs like that. Wixie is of course amazing for presentations.
(6:26 - 6:46) And that's what gave me the inspiration to start using it for our morning news. Inside, we can either record our videos live by coming here into video, going to camera. And then we can of course record right in here right away.
(6:48 - 6:57) Oh, yeah, I didn't go into the camera mode before. I'm using a guest account here. Didn't wanna accidentally show any student information, but as you know, it's very easy to record.
(6:57 - 7:24) Especially love this sub-picture button when we're recording because that allows us to read the slide while we're recording. So very helpful for the days that our principal's absent and I need to record the principal's message for her. And of course, we also do a lot of recording of our morning news using iPhones or iPads.
(7:25 - 7:52) And when we're not uploading directly, we of course can go to video and my files and then we can upload. It of course works natively, whether you record on a smartphone or a tablet, not an issue. And here's a little life hack that I've learned where if you're uploading indirectly, like you have a .mov file, a little known life hack.
(7:52 - 8:08) If you change the name of the file from movie.mov to movie.mp4, it can just be uploaded straight to Wixie right away. It works, you don't even have to do any converting. It's a nice little life hack.
(8:13 - 8:30) So, and of course, YouTube videos are inserted just by going to YouTube and putting in the link right there. It's very easy for the kids to add Wixie stickers or pictures from the internet like this. They come right in.
(8:31 - 8:48) The backgrounds make the videos look very charming. Of course, this of course is a very coming back from summer type of background. And yeah, the kids love to make pages like this, which they research and do it on their own.
(8:50 - 9:13) So rather than just show you what I've made, let me actually take you into the process here. So to make a Wixie morning news show, I just come in and I start a new landscape project. What I do here is now I share it with my morning news team.
(9:14 - 9:37) If you come into team, I can of course pick the grade level working with with our school. Here at Koch Elementary, you can come in and add students who are the member of the morning news crew. And of course, we can come in here and add other teachers.
(9:38 - 9:52) For example, here's where I would come to add our librarian, our principal, any other teachers who wanna collaborate. Our music teachers love to upload students singing the school song. So it makes collaboration so easy.
(9:56 - 10:20) Once it's been shared with everyone, we've got access and we can start working on it. So we can come in, like to start with maybe a nice background, find something we like here, starting school. I guess fall is a little too early for that, right? So let's find a nice one here.
(10:20 - 10:43) Let's make it old fashioned with some parchment. And you know, add text and you know, here we've got the morning news show. Make it look exactly how you want, get that fabulous font, and then you're ready to go.
(10:44 - 11:11) Now here's some tricks that we have done over the years. First of all, Wixie of course does have the option for us to record our voices either right on the slide, or of course we can use our brand new talkie stickers too. The problem is in presentation mode, when the people are watching it, if you don't click it, it won't automatically play.
(11:11 - 11:41) So if you do choose to put your morning announcements in an audio recording or a talkie sticker, you of course need to include a note to click it to start playing. That's why our favorite way to do things is clicking the video button, going into the camera to record, load up, here it comes, no rush. There we go.

(12:35 - 12:50) So she can work on it on her own and work ahead as much as she wants. So I come in here to import pages to get them from another document like this. So I can come in and say, all right, let me get the Principal's Message for today.
(12:50 - 12:56) I'll click that and click import. And there we go. So there's the Principal's Message ready to go in here.
(12:57 - 13:10) And it's just fabulous. It just works so smoothly. And let me put some fears at ease here.
(13:12 - 13:45) First of all, you do of course need to lecture your morning news crew about responsibility because you don't want anyone messing around with it or messing with other people's work. It's something that kids can get offended by if you're not careful. But of course, Wixie has that great built-in option to go to File, Inspect Project, which allows you to revert back to an earlier stage in case it was messed up by someone.
(13:46 - 14:05) You can come into here and get to the right place and make sure everything looks the way you want it to. So it's very easy to see who did the edits when. Back into edit mode, we go.
(14:08 - 14:18) And now that we have finished recording the morning news, we're all set. We can go to File. We can go to Share.
(14:19 - 14:52) We can copy our link right here. And then this link can be put either directly on your school website or on your school intranet website, or it can be emailed out to teachers for them to bookmark, or maybe your technology team can make you a bookmark directly to it right on your desktop. No matter how your school likes to share links, very easy to put it out with whatever level of privacy your school likes, and you're good to go.
(14:54 - 15:12) It is a super easy way to do the morning news. And I gotta tell you, my absolute favorite thing about doing the morning news this way is it really puts it in the hands of the students. We used to do a live morning news show at Westbriar.
(15:13 - 15:35) However, whenever we're doing a live morning news, we always have to use a pre-written script for the students to follow. And I gotta tell you, the students don't have time to write the scripts, of course. And I gotta tell you, I have not found many students who are interested in writing the scripts anyway.
(15:37 - 16:14) When we do these pre-recorded videos like this, it allows the students to have complete creative control on their segments, allows them to get it ready. And it's truly student-centered work now. I should show you what we like to do is, first we have the, for kids at our school, we say, don't pass until Friday slide, right? Right here, to warn people to stop.
(16:16 - 16:28) Then we have other fun things here. One segment the kids always love to do is the sports report. So rather than waste time recording another video, I'll just call this the sports page.
(16:30 - 17:03) And then of course, after all this, we have the thank you for turning in page, right? But the secret of our morning news is the thank you for turning in page is not the last page of the morning announcements. Underneath this page is the in progress section right here. This is where the students will be working on, like for example, a trivia page that they wanna give to the kids.
(17:05 - 17:32) And of course, Monday, it might look like this. They're just getting started on it. On Tuesday, they've decided they finally want to have a background picture of the Coliseum because they're making the trivia related to that, right? So we're gonna have some Coliseum trivia here.
(17:33 - 17:49) Then later they'll record their video and get it all set. When the student is done preparing their slide, the librarian and I who collaborate on this, we say, all right, this one looks good to go. And we drag it up to the ready section.
(17:49 - 18:06) So it's ready to show when our Friday long show starts. And that is the gist of how we do the Westbriar Morning News. I hope this was inspirational and I hope you got some ideas.
(18:07 - 18:31) We just love how convenient it is for us, how it puts it in the student hands, how easy it is for us to include our principal and other staff members who wanna collaborate. For example, our librarian does lots of book events. Our music team likes to put up random classes of the school singing our Westbriar theme song, Maroon and White.
(18:33 - 18:40) We have teachers who like to go on and tell jokes. It's just collaboration paradise. It's so easy.
(18:40 - 18:54) And the fact that you can share the link and it can be opened by anyone without an account, it's just golden. So that is why we love Wixie for our Westbriar Morning News. And that's all I have for the main presentation.
(18:54 - 19:10) Are there any questions? So I think I was looking at the principal's page that you have. And she had like a, it was like, but this is the day Monday. So does she record a different one every single day of the week? Every single day.
(19:10 - 19:24) She personally loves to have that connection with the students. Our school is very busy and she doesn't have time to get into the classrooms a lot. So this is the main way she likes to connect with our students.
(19:24 - 19:39) That way she can record a personalized message every day of the week. And she also does dismissal over the intercom where she comes in and she gives the answer to the daily riddle. Oh fun, okay.
(19:39 - 20:14) Which I had to look up, which was hysterical, so. Yes. So when she does like Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and you progress through the week, do you just move it then below that thanks for tuning in page? What I do is when I get to school in the morning, I come in every day and I go to file, import and I import it from her document because she looks ahead and makes the whole month and then records the video either the day, the morning of, the day before or whenever she needs to, depending on her meetings and her schedule.
(20:15 - 20:25) Wonderful, okay. So then how is this? I love that you can pre-record the videos. And like you said, that makes it easy for you to have the kids do it and you can monitor that and they can edit and fix.
(20:25 - 21:01) How is it presented to all of the different classrooms? Do teachers just open the URL on their own? Is it on a, yeah, do you have a school-wide video? How do you do that? We have a link right on our website where it doesn't matter if it's a teacher, if it's a student helper, if it's a substitute, if it's a classroom monitor. Anyone can easily click the link and it goes straight to that view I showed you before where you just see, I mean here, I guess I can do it in this window too. (21:09 - 21:20) Just like that, there we are in the morning news. Nice. And of course the videos play automatically when they come up and it's just super convenient for everything.
(21:21 - 21:37) And that would allow me to differentiate a little bit within my rooms too if I had a crisis or someone crying or my kids need longer to read one of the pages. Teachers can take as long to get through announcements as they need for their class. Yes, and it's available all day long.
(21:37 - 22:09) So in case you have a morning presentation or anything like that, they can open the morning news at noon, they can do it at the end of the day instead of the beginning of the day and just do the pledge themselves and then show the announcements at the end of the day. And we have a program at our school called Fairfax Friends, which it's a buddy system with the older students and the younger students. And that happens most Friday mornings.
(22:09 - 22:19) So lots of classrooms like to show the long version of the morning news on Thursday. So we usually try to have those ready by Thursday when the program is running. Wonderful, okay.

What I do is when I get to school in the morning, I come in every day and I go to file, import and I import it from her document because she looks ahead and makes the whole month and then records the video either the day, the morning of, the day before or whenever she needs to, depending on her meetings and her schedule.
(20:15 - 20:25) Wonderful, okay. So then how is this? I love that you can pre-record the videos. And like you said, that makes it easy for you to have the kids do it and you can monitor that and they can edit and fix.
(20:25 - 21:01) How is it presented to all of the different classrooms? Do teachers just open the URL on their own? Is it on a, yeah, do you have a school-wide video? How do you do that? We have a link right on our website where it doesn't matter if it's a teacher, if it's a student helper, if it's a substitute, if it's a classroom monitor. Anyone can easily click the link and it goes straight to that view I showed you before where you just see, I mean here, I guess I can do it in this window too. (21:09 - 21:20) Just like that, there we are in the morning news. Nice. And of course the videos play automatically when they come up and it's just super convenient for everything.
(21:21 - 21:37) And that would allow me to differentiate a little bit within my rooms too if I had a crisis or someone crying or my kids need longer to read one of the pages. Teachers can take as long to get through announcements as they need for their class. Yes, and it's available all day long.
(21:37 - 22:09) So in case you have a morning presentation or anything like that, they can open the morning news at noon, they can do it at the end of the day instead of the beginning of the day and just do the pledge themselves and then show the announcements at the end of the day. And we have a program at our school called Fairfax Friends, which it's a buddy system with the older students and the younger students. And that happens most Friday mornings.
(22:09 - 22:19) So lots of classrooms like to show the long version of the morning news on Thursday. So we usually try to have those ready by Thursday when the program is running. Wonderful, okay.
